Re: Reclaim space?

Currently, the only to do that is to dump the data and recreate another instance using that. For performance reasons we don't use innodb_file_per_table and, sadly, Innodb never shrinks the default tablespace.

Fwd: Native MySQL Connections for Cloud SQL

Hi Joe,

This is great, I think we were all waiting for that.
The last issue with the the PHP > GAE is the cURL library.
Without PHP curl, no Facebook Graph API, no Mixpanel API, many Wordpress addons are out-of-service and many Google API SDK services no longer works.

If cURL is such a problem, can you emulate it through a global PHP function with the same name and doing the same job?

Best regards,
Brice

We are also making it possible to replicate your Cloud SQL data to other MySQL databases not on Google's cloud, meaning:

  • Off-cloud analytics that won't interfere with your transactional database

  • Fully redundant standby on another platform in case of multiple simultaneous outages to Google Cloud.

Note that this functionality will also be available in the new version of the API (v1beta3). The existing version (v1beta1) is still available, but deprecated.

We periodically restart Cloud SQL instances to perform upgrades, migrate between data centers, etc. Since your data is replicated in multiple locations, the interruption to your service is very short -- typically a few seconds. (You can test this yourself by pressing the 'restart' button in the console, which has the same effect.)

Occasionally the MySQL instance fails to shut down cleanly. If this happens we force a crash, in which case the instance takes longer to recover when it restarts (up to a few minutes). We have recently increased the timeout before forcing a crash from 1 minute to 10 minutes, since we believe it is preferable for the MySQL instance to be shut down cleanly.

Re: connect to multiple cloud sql instances/databases from dev server?

so I've looked into this more, and it doesn't look possible.

the problem is, if i try to connect like an external app via the dev environment, i get the following error:

"java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: java.util.prefs.Preferences is a restricted class. Please see the Google  App Engine developer's guide for more details."

So because Preferences is restricted in GAE, and because you need to use this to set properties to access like an external app, it [accessing multiple instances from dev environmen] can't be done.

Can someone please comment if this is correct and a limitation of the GAE dev environment??

connect to multiple cloud sql instances/databases from dev server?

How do i connect to multiple instances from the dev server?
There must be some way around the hard coded 1 instance 1 database in the Eclipse setup.

what i need to do:

connect to /instance1/db3 read some info
connect to /instance2/dbxyz read and write some info

right now i'm connecting with a string like this:

 "jdbc:google:rdbms://" + MASTER_INSTANCE_NAME + "/" + MASTER_DATABASE_NAME;

Re: Export SQL to cloud storage contains only table definitions, no data

Hi Ralph,

thanks a lot for the information.
As my project is mainly for databases accessed by Google Spreadsheets there is no AppEngine page I can reach (only in the new one - that's the point of migration) and with that I can not follow the steps you have described.
I will have a look into the Wire Protocol some time later - but it seems some additional connection information is needed (which I could not find in a short time now).

Anyway thanks a lot for the info.

Best regards,
Dirk

My business partner Roland started working with it and it seems to work fine. I didn't try it myself yet because some time later the regular export function was working again...

It's probably not of much help but this is what happened in my case.

Re: Export SQL to cloud storage contains only table definitions, no data

Dear Ralph,

thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately I cannot confirm this - I just tried it and it didn't work.
The main reason is that I still have what is mentioned as "legacy" project and I want to migrate to a new created project (to use the newer features). Is this what is working for you?
Are you using the old or the new interface (actually I have tried both without success).

Thanks a lot for your help,
Dirk

Re: Export SQL to cloud storage contains only table definitions, no data

Dear Joe,

I have come across this post a couple times looking to a solution to export data from Cloud SQL.
The purpose is to change the database from one project to another, both Google.
Is there any export solution including data - or another way to transfer data from one to another Cloud SQL project?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

We're using Google Cloud SQL for a hour registration tool. This tool is being used regularly by about 40 users so we need a good strategy for making changes to the database. It surprised us somewhat that the google_sql.sh tool allows you to upload a SQL file but not export and download one. After looking into the documentation I saw that Google Cloud Storage is the preferred medium of exchange. This is fine for us except for the fact that the SQL file exported from Cloud SQL does not contain the actual records, only the table DROP/CREATE statements.

Is there a special option or configuration setting that I have to set in order to let the dump contain the records as well? Or am I missing something else? Maybe there's some error being produced under the hood but I don't have access to the lower level logs as far as I know. The operations log in the cloud console just reports that the export went fine.

It's really problematic for us that we're not able to download a copy of the database so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: MySQL connect error

Are you using the correct MySQL connection settings described here: https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/php/cloud-sql/#PHP_Connecting_to_your_Cloud_SQL_instance

Also, have you given the app permission to access the CloudSQL database: https://developers.google.com/cloud-sql/docs/access_control#appaccess
